Belt Promotion Requirements

Students progress through 11 different belt levels from White to Black. Each belt level includes increasingly challenging requirements for up to 12 different elements, such as, Strikes, Kicks, Self Defense Techniques, etc. For the specific requirements for each level, click the 'Read More' button below.

Yellow Belt Promotion Requirements

Yellow Belt Requirements:

1. Kicks: Student must be able to perform front ball kick and front snap kick.

2. Strikes: Student must be able to perform front-two-knuckle jab & cross and palm strike.

3. Break Falls: Student must perform a front tuck, right and left shoulder roll and back break fall.

4. Blocks: Student must be able to perform the 10-point blocking system.

5. Stances: Student must be able to demonstrate the proper 'ready stance' and 'guard stance.'

6. Pushups: Student must be able to perform 6 pushups.

7. Self Defense Basics: Student must be able to demonstrate step-block-push technique. Student must be able to demonstrate evade and retreat technique.

8. Self Defense against a grab: Student must be able to subdue attacker from the following grabs: single and double lapel grab.

9. Self Defense against an attack: Student must perform a minimum of one self defence technique. 

10. Holds & Submissions: Student must be able to demonstrate a snake-wrap hold.

11. Takedowns: Student must be able to perform one takedown maneuver, such as, Trip takedown.

12. Animals: Student must be able to identify at least one of the animals that represents Nagado.

Orange Belt Requirements:

1. Kicks: Student must be able to perform front ball kick, front snap kick, back kick and roundhouse kick.

2. Strikes: Student must be able to perform four strikes: front-two-knuckle jab & cross, thrust punch, palm strike and hammer fist.

3. Break Falls: Student must perform a front tuck, right and left shoulder roll and back break fall.

4. Blocks: Student must be able to perform the 10-point blocking system with push counters.

5. Stances: Student must be able to demonstrate the proper 'ready stance,' 'guard stance' and 'horse stance.'

6. Pushups: Student must be able to perform 10 pushups.

7. Self Defense Basics: Student must be able to demonstrate step-block-strike technique. Student must be able to demonstrate evade and retreat technique with push counter.

8. Self Defense against a grab: Student must be able to subdue attacker from the following grabs: single and double lapel grab, and headlock.

9. Self Defense against an attack: Student must perform a minimum of three self defence techniques. 

10. Holds & Submissions: Student must be able to demonstrate a snake-wrap and bear hug.

11. Takedowns: Student must be able to perform three takedown maneuvers, such as, Trip takedown, headlock takedown and 2-handed reaping throw.

Purple Belt Requirements:

2. Strikes: Student must be able to perform six strikes: front-two-knuckle jab & cross, thrust punch, palm strike, hammer fist, hook punch and upper cut.

3. Break Falls: Student must perform a front tuck, right and left shoulder roll and back break fall.

4. Blocks: Student must be able to perform the 10-point blocking system with push and palm strike counters.

5. Stances: Student must be able to demonstrate the proper 'ready stance,' 'guard stance' and 'horse stance.'

6. Pushups: Student must be able to perform 15 pushups.

7. Self Defense Basics: Student must be able to demonstrate step-block-strike technique combinations with increasing effectiveness. Student must be able to demonstrate evade and retreat technique with counter attack combinations of increasing effectiveness.

8. Self Defense against a grab: Student must be able to subdue attacker from the following grabs: single and double lapel grab, headlock, hair grab and two-handed choke.

9. Self Defense against an attack: Student must perform a minimum of five self defence techniques. 

10. Holds & Submissions: Student must be able to demonstrate a snake-wrap, headlock, bear hug and collar clutch.

11. Take-downs: Student must be able to perform five take-down maneuvers, such as, Trip take-down, headlock take-down, 2-handed reaping throw, push-pull and corkscrew.

12. Animals: Student must be able to identify at least five of the animals that represent Nagado.

13. Forms: Student must be able to perform Mighty Stallion and Charging Stallion.

6. Pushups: Student must be able to perform 20 pushups.

7. Self Defense Basics: Student must be able to demonstrate step-block-strike technique combinations with increasing effectivenesss. Student must be able to demonstrate evade, retreat and advance technique with counter attack combinations of increasing effectiveness.

8. Self Defense against a grab: Student must be able to subdue attacker from the following grabs: single and double lapel grab, headlock, hair grab, two-handed choke and bear hug. Student must be able to subdue attacker with come-along.

9. Self Defense against an attack: Student must perform a minimum of seven self defence techniques. 

10. Holds & Submissions: Student must be able to demonstrate a snake-wrap, headlock, bear hug, collar clutch and wrist lock (come-along).

11. Takedowns: Student must be able to perform five takedown maneuvers, such as, Trip takedown, headlock takedown, 2-handed reaping throw, push-pull, corkscrew and reaping throws 1 & 2.

12. Animals: Student must be able to identify all seven of the animals that represent Nagado.

13. Forms: Student must be able to perform Mighty Stallion, Charging Stallion and Joyful Dolphin.

3. Break Falls: Student must perform a front tuck, right and left shoulder roll, back break fall and right & left arm drag breakfalls.

4. Blocks: Student must be able to perform the 10-point blocking system with various counters of increasing effectiveness.

5. Stances: Student must be able to demonstrate the proper 'ready stance,' 'guard stance,' 'horse stance' and 'cat stance.'

6. Pushups: Student must be able to perform 25 pushups.

7. Self Defense Basics: Student must be able to demonstrate step-block-strike technique combinations with increasing effectivenesss. Student must be able to demonstrate evade, retreat and advance technique with counter attack combinations of increasing effectiveness.

8. Self Defense against a grab: Student must be able to subdue attacker from the following grabs: single and double lapel grab, headlock, hair grab, two-handed choke, bear hug, grab from behind and two-handed wrist grab. Student must be able to subdue attacker with come-along and figure-four.

9. Self Defense against an attack: Student must perform a minimum of nine self defence techniques. 

10. Holds & Submissions: Student must be able to demonstrate a snake-wrap, headlock, bear hug, collar clutch, wrist lock (come-along) and figure-four.

11. Takedowns: Student must be able to perform five takedown maneuvers, such as, Trip takedown, headlock takedown, 2-handed reaping throw, push-pull, corkscrew, reaping throws 1 & 2, hip throw and reverse-choke suicide throw.

12. Animals: Student must be able to identify all seven of the animals that represent Nagado and explain what at least one animal represents.

13. Forms: Student must be able to perform Mighty Stallion, Charging Stallion, Joyful Dolphin and Cheetah Run.

Red Belt Requirements:

8. Self Defense against a grab: Student must be able to subdue attacker from the following grabs: single and double lapel grab, headlock, hair grab, two-handed choke, bear hug, grab from behind, two-handed wrist grab, full-nelson and rear choke. Student must be able to subdue attacker with come-along and figure-four.

9. Self Defense against an attack: Student must perform a minimum of eleven self defence techniques. 

10. Directional Attacks: Student must demonstrate the ability to defend against any type of frontal attack.

11. Holds & Submissions: Student must be able to demonstrate a snake-wrap, headlock, bear hug, collar clutch, wrist lock (come-along), figure-four, arm bar and leg lock.

12. Takedowns: Student must be able to perform five takedown maneuvers, such as, Trip takedown, headlock takedown, 2-handed reaping throw, push-pull, corkscrew, reaping throws 1 & 2, hip throw, reverse-choke suicide throw, arm drag takedown and shoulder throw.

13. Animals: Student must be able to identify all seven of the animals that represent Nagado and explain what at least two animals represent.

14. Forms: Student must be able to perform Mighty Stallion, Charging Stallion, Joyful Dolphin, Cheetah Run, Evasive Snake, Flight of the Bald Eagle, Elusive Deer, Protective Dolphin, Prowling Cheetah, Spirited Dragon and Seven Animals of Nagado

15. Heavy Bag Student: will be required to demonstrate proper punching and kicking techniques for up to a five-minute period. 

16. Sparring: Student will be required to spar with other students and/or Black Belts for a specified period of time. Student must demonstrate various attack and defense techniques. 

17. Grappling: Student will be required to demonstrate specific grappling techniques including: guard position, applying arm bars, leg locks and chokes from various positions, and reversal techniques. Student must also demonstrate up to six different choke techniques and must be able to differentiate between chokes and neck restraints.

18. Weapons Self Defense: Student must be able to defend against knife and club attacks.

19. Board Breaking: Student must be able to break a stack of five boards. Student must also be able to break single boards using various kicks and strikes.

20. Theory: Student will be required to answer certain theoretical questions throughout the test, such as, naming the five animals of Kempo, listing and explaining the first two rules of self defense, etc.

21. Other Requirements:
Teaching: Students must teach a minimum of 20 hours to be eligible for the Black Belt test. 
Annual In-house Tournament: Students must participate in judging a minimum of two Annual In-house tournament to be eligible for the Black Belt test.
